The President Director of PT KAI (Persero), Bobby Rasyidin, has announced a firm initiative to close all unauthorized railway crossings that fail to meet safety standards. This decisive move comes in the wake of a serious train collision at East Bekasi Station last Monday night.
“There is no room for compromise. we have seen how even a slight lapse in safety can lead to a significant number of casualties,” Bobby stated on Thursday, April 30, 2026. He emphasized that the safety of passengers and the public remains the company’s absolute priority.
In a coordinated effort, PT KAI and the Directorate General of Railways under the Ministry of Transportation will conduct a comprehensive review of existing crossings. Any intersection found lacking essential safety protocols will be permanently shuttered. Bobby also issued a stern warning to the public, urging them not to reopen crossings that have been closed by the authorities for safety reasons.
Furthermore, the public is urged to strictly adhere to regulations at official PT KAI crossings. Bobby explained that official crossings are far more sophisticated than simple barriers; they are equipped with advanced sensor technology designed to detect approaching trains and ensure safe passage.
As part of a broader safety roadmap, PT KAI plans to upgrade and secure 1,800 railway crossings, both official and illegal. These safety enhancements will involve the construction of flyovers or the installation of modernized, system-integrated gate barriers. Meanwhile, Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that his office has identified priority locations among the thousands of crossings nationwide that require immediate attention. “We are prioritizing the most hazardous points for improvement this year,” he noted.
The push for safer infrastructure has received support from the highest level of government. President Prabowo Subianto has approved a proposal from the Bekasi regional government to construct a flyover following a recent collision between a Commuter Line train and the Argo Bromo Anggrek. The President highlighted that the 1,800 unguarded intersections across Java remain a primary factor in the frequency of railway accidents.
Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), revealed that President Prabowo will provide hundreds of billions of rupiah in aid to facilitate the flyover construction in Bekasi. This follows the tragic accident at East Bekasi Station on Monday night, April 27, 2026. According to Dasco, the local government had long planned the Bulak Kapal flyover to alleviate traffic congestion and safety risks, but the project had been stalled by budget limitations.
“I presented this issue to the President and requested Presidential Assistance so the flyover could finally be realized. Fortunately, the President has approved IDR 200 billion in aid,” said the Daily Chair of the Gerindra Party during an interview on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
The flyover project is fast-tracked for completion within the next four to five months. According to data provided by Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto Tjahyono, the presence of an elevated crossing is projected to reduce the risk of accidents at the site by up to 90 percent, providing a long-term solution to the region’s safety concerns.
