“The Bank Indonesia Consumer Survey in April 2026 indicates that consumer confidence in economic conditions remains robust,” stated Ramdan Denny Prakoso, Executive Director of BI’s Communication Department, in a press release issued on Monday, May 11, 2026. This positive outlook underscores the resilience of domestic demand and economic stability.

Denny further elaborated that the sustained consumer confidence in April 2026 was primarily bolstered by an improvement in the Current Economic Condition Index (CECI). This index climbed to 116.5, an encouraging rise from 115.4 recorded in the preceding month, reflecting an improved perception of present economic realities.

The increase in the CECI was driven by positive movements in key sub-indices. The Employment Availability Index rose to 108.8, up from 107.8, while the Durable Goods Purchase Index saw an increase to 112.6 from 109.2. These figures suggest a greater perceived availability of jobs and a willingness to invest in long-lasting consumer items. Conversely, the Current Income Index experienced a slight dip, registering 128.1 compared to 129.2 in the previous month.

However, the Consumer Expectation Index (CEI) experienced a marginal decline in April, falling to 129.6 from its previous position of 130.4. This moderation in future outlook was evident across all components of the CEI. The Income Expectation Index decreased to 136.9 from 137.7, while the Employment Availability Expectation Index slightly declined to 127.7 from 128.0. Similarly, the Business Activity Expectation Index also saw a reduction, moving from 125.5 to 124.1.

Consumer expectations regarding future business activities showed varied trends across different spending groups. The highest index for business activity expectations was recorded at 129.2 among the spending group earning Rp 4.1-5 million. In contrast, the Rp 1-2 million spending group saw a decrease in business activity expectations, dropping to 112.3 from 114.6 in the prior month. Conversely, the Rp 2.1-3 million group reported an increase in expectations, rising to 119.0 from 113.9. Meanwhile, expectations for the Rp 4.2-5 million group decreased from 125.4 to 118.4.

Summary

The Bank Indonesia Consumer Survey for April 2026 reports that the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) rose to 123.9, up from 122.9 the previous month. This growth was largely driven by an improved Current Economic Condition Index, which reached 116.5 due to higher employment availability and increased spending on durable goods.

Despite the overall positive sentiment regarding current conditions, the Consumer Expectation Index saw a slight decline to 129.6. This moderation in future outlook reflected broad decreases across income, employment, and business activity expectations, suggesting varied confidence levels among different economic spending groups.
