Extreme Weather Hits DIY: Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Batter the Region

A series of violent storms, characterized by heavy rain and powerful winds, swept across several regions of the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Wednesday afternoon, May 20, 2026. The Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD DIY) reported widespread damage, including fallen trees, broken branches, and damaged rooftops caused by the extreme weather.

Agustinus Ruruh Haryata, Chief Executive of BPBD DIY, stated that the severe weather began around 2:00 PM and was anticipated to persist until 4:00 PM. This event followed an earlier BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency) weather warning, which had predicted moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds across Yogyakarta City, Sleman, Bantul, Kulon Progo, and Gunungkidul regencies.

“Our rapid response team, alongside relevant stakeholders, immediately conducted damage assessments and emergency clean-up operations in the affected areas,” said Agustinus on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

In Yogyakarta City, the impacts were most significant in the Gondokusuman and Jetis districts. On Jalan Sunaryo, a fallen tree severed telephone and power lines while simultaneously blocking traffic. Another tree toppled on Jalan Ahmad Jazuli, specifically near Campus V of Sanata Dharma University, damaging a motorcycle parking area. Meanwhile, broken tree branches obstructed access on Jalan Kemakmuran, and on Jalan Cik Di Tiro, a fallen tree struck the signage of the Dr. YAP Eye Hospital.

In the Jetis district, a fallen tree on Jalan Tentara Pelajar in the Bumijo Village disrupted both road access and telephone cables. Strong winds in the Jogoyudan area of Gowongan Village caused a residential roof to collapse, while several other rooftops in the Gondolayu and Kleringan districts were reportedly ripped off by the gusts.

BPBD DIY confirmed that emergency crews are currently working to clear debris and coordinate with various agencies to expedite road access restoration. These efforts involve joint personnel from multiple institutions working alongside local residents. BPBD DIY urges the public to remain vigilant, as the risk of heavy rain and strong winds may continue to affect parts of Yogyakarta throughout the evening.
